16th International Triennial of Small Graphic Forms Poland – Łódź: exhibition: 22.06.2017 - 03.09.2017

Added 11.06.2017

16th International Triennial of Small Graphic Forms, Poland – Łódź 2017

The International Triennial of Small Forms of Graphic Art, Poland – Lodz is an exhibition presenting graphic work of contemporary artists from dozens of countries worldwide. It is one of the oldest recurrent events dedicated to that field of art. The exceptional character and the international recognition of the project can be confirmed by the fact that 632 artists from almost all continents sent their graphic works to the competition announced in 2016. Thanks to the completion of a thorough redecoration of the Willa Gallery, according to the tradition started in 1979, the Triennial exposition is held in the historical building of the Art Nouveau villa designed by Gustaw Landau-Gutenteger.

Like in the previous editions, the artists sent their graphics made in the last three years, or in case of those who have participated in the Triennial for the first time, the works which they regarded as mostly valued. The works are often inspired by the avant-garde tradition in art, among others Expressionism, Surrealism or Geometric Abstraction, and sometimes they reflect a unique character of cultures and the history of particular countries. In the 16th edition of the Triennial we feature the works of artists who have taken part in the exhibition nearly since the very first edition in 1979, as well as those who have debuted here. The representatives of the young generation of artists are the ones who search for new technical solutions and experiment with combining a variety of graphic techniques.

Artistic graphic art attracts those who are able to transform the matter of the graphic plate into an image that preserves the observed beauty yet they can also create the intuition of beauty in the metaphysical sense. The small graphic form, hardly spectacular in its scale, is a form of expression where artists inscribe all their experience.

In 2016, according to the statute of the Triennial, the entries for the exhibition must be prints from graphic plates with the format of 12 x 15 cm, made in the so called ‘traditional techniques’.

632 artists from 53 countries sent 2099 works. The jury qualified 914 graphics of 384 artists from 47 countries, among others from Argentina, Belgium, Belarus, Brazil, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Georgia, Greece, Spain, Holland, India, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, Germany, Norway, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary, Great Britain or Italy.

In the 16th edition the jury awarded 14 artists with the Honourable Medals. The Medal had been designed by Ewa Tyc-Karpińska:

1. Martin R. Baeyens - Belgia
2. Marek Basiul – Polska
3. Kalojan Kolibarow – Bułgaria
4. Torill Elisabeth Larsen – Norwegia
5. Andrzej Łabuz – Polska
6. Lesław Miśkiewicz – Polska
7. Agata Niźnikiewicz – Polska
8. Miwako Oso – Japonia
9. Margaret Sander – Niemcy
10. Eliane Santos Rocha – Brazylia
11. Aleksandar Todorow – Bułgaria
12. Krzysztof Tomalski – Polska
13. Michalina Wawrzyczek-Klasik – Polska
14. Toshio Yoshizumi – Japonia

Due to the organisation of the 15 previous editions of the Triennial in 1979-2014 the City Art Gallery in Lodz gathered a collection of small forms of graphic art accounting for 11 975 works from 86 countries and it creates the right background for the promotion of graphic works in Poland and abroad. The collection will be continued as nearly all the authors-participants of the 16th Triennial declared their will to bequeath their works to the collection of the Gallery.
