'Grohman's Barrels' - the gate to Ludwik Grohman's textile factory complex

64 Targowa St.
90-324 Łódź

The gate, currently one of the most famous elements of industrial architecture in Lodz, was erected in 1896. It was the main entrance to the weaving mill at the textile factory complex established in 1842 by the progenitor of the Grohman dynasty in Lodz - Traugott. The textile factory complex was at that time one of the largest in the Kingdom of Poland. The same as in the case of other factories of a similar rank, efforts were made to add monumentality to this particular one, too. The form of the red brick gate relates to mediaeval defensive buildings. Two thick columns, reminding of barrels or spools, support a tall gable flanked with towers.
